Culturally curious conversations

The GP successfully manages to explore the perception of additional help and the influences that inform Parvati's husband and family's position.

With the use of pauses through the explanation, notice the language used is that of possibility:- 'perhaps' and 'might', 'at the level you want or don't want'- she clarifies the role of carers at levels that he may not have considered and his position of objection to a stranger coming into the home visibly softens after this discussion. At no point does this feel imposed or judgemental of the views expressed. By the GP adopting this approach, Mr Patel has the opportunity to consider his choices and still decline the offer. Shared Decision Making means that the patient or family member is left with all choices available without feeling coerced or subject to bias for a preferred option on behalf of the clinician.

The GP spends time appreciating the additional views of the immediate family, then the community, to the point that the introduction of culturally sensitive carers and Dementia Cafés landed in a positive way.
